Mexico will play a unique role at the 2026 FIFA World Cup: as the host nation in its own stadium. The tournament will kick off on 11 June at the legendary Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, where Mexico will face South Africa. Never before has a Mexican national team found itself in such a position. Manager Javier Aguirre is in his third spell as national manager and knows exactly the pressure and expectations of a football-mad nation.

Mexico's goalkeepers at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Manager Javier Aguirre has named three goalkeepers for El Tri: Raúl Rangel, Guillermo Ochoa and Carlos Acevedo. Mexico are co-hosts and will kick off the tournament on 11 June with the opening match against South Africa at the newly renovated Estadio Azteca in Mexico City – the first opening match on Mexican soil since 1986. South Korea and the Czech Republic also await in Group A. The trio of goalkeepers brings together the greatest goalkeeping talent of the current Liga MX generation, a living legend on the verge of a world record, and an experienced first-choice keeper who is the surprise selection in the squad.

Ochoa, aged 40, is set to take part in his sixth World Cup. This will make him the first Mexican player ever to reach this milestone, and one of only three players worldwide – alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo – to have played in six consecutive World Cup tournaments since 2006. His last appearance for the national team was 561 days ago, when Aguirre recalled him for the World Cup warm-up matches against Portugal and Belgium. In the friendly against Australia at the Rose Bowl, he came on as a substitute and received a standing ovation.

Ochoa currently plays for AEL Limassol in Cyprus. His career has taken him from América via Ajaccio, Standard Liège, Málaga, Granada, Sampdoria, Club América, Salernitana, Almería and PAOK to the Cypriot top-flight side. With over 152 international caps, he is Mexico’s most-capped goalkeeper. The decision to select him was controversial in Mexico – but for Aguirre it was clear: you don’t send a legend home without a send-off.

Rangel, aged 26, is Aguirre’s clear first choice. His entire career has been spent within the Chivas family: youth team at Guadalajara, four seasons as first-choice keeper for the reserve side Tapatío in the Liga de Expansión MX, before making his first-team debut for Chivas in October 2023. Since then, he has established himself as one of the most consistent keepers in Liga MX. In the 2024/25 season, he started all 33 league matches and kept 12 clean sheets – the best figures of his career to date. This season, he has made 34 appearances for Chivas, where he is rated 7.07 on FotMob.

He made his international debut in June 2024 and has since earned 11 caps. With the national team, he won the 2024/25 CONCACAF Nations League and the 2025 Gold Cup – two titles in his first season as first-choice goalkeeper. His contract with Chivas runs until 2028. Rangel embodies what Aguirre is building for Mexico: young, home-grown and reliable.

Acevedo, aged 29, is the most surprising selection in the entire Mexican squad. He has been under contract with Santos Laguna since 2017 – a remarkably long period of club loyalty in Liga MX. This season, he has made 29 league appearances, having suffered a minor setback with a brief injury in February 2026. In his best season – the 2020/21 Apertura/Clausura – he featured in 42 league matches and kept 13 clean sheets, one of the strongest statistical records for a goalkeeper in the league during that period. At international level, he has only six caps to his name – all in the CONCACAF Nations League and Copa América qualifiers. Aguirre rates him as an experienced third-choice goalkeeper with a long history in the top flight.
