The Truth About Grip Sprays: 5 Myths We’re Setting the Record Straight On
Grip Spray is the most underrated and, at the same time, most misunderstood product in a goalkeeper’s kit. Everyone has a bottle in their bag. Hardly anyone knows what actually happens inside when they spray it.
The problem is that most grip sprays on the market are off-the-shelf products with interchangeable labels, made by people who know nothing about glove latex. We didn’t make this up. We make gloves. We know what happens to latex under stress and what causes it to break down.
It’s time to dispel the myths.
MYTH #1: More spray = more grip
The truth is: latex needs time, not quantity. A thin, even layer left to set for 5 to 10 minutes is more effective than three sprays just before kick-off. Using too much clogs the pores in the latex instead of activating them. The result: sticky residue instead of grip.
How to use it correctly: Spray Grip Glue thinly and evenly onto the palm of your hand, allow it to soak in, then rub your gloves together. Done.
MYTH #2: All grip sprays are the same
The truth is: most sprays available online are the same product with a different label. Originally designed for baseball gloves or gymnastic bars, they’ve simply been relabelled for goalkeepers. However, latex is not a neutral surface. Soft match-day latex requires a different treatment to hard training latex.
The difference: Grip Glue was developed by Glove Glu, the manufacturer that launched the very first grip spray for goalkeeping gloves back in 2012. With a formula designed for one purpose only: goalkeeper latex.
Today, Glove Glu is the leading manufacturer of grip sprays for goalkeepers, used worldwide by professionals and amateurs alike.
MYTH #3: Grip spray is a substitute for poor-quality gloves
The truth: No spray can revive dead latex. Once the base material is worn out, it’s worn out. Grip Spray enhances existing grip; it doesn’t create new grip. A realistic expectation: It gets the most out of the latex that’s still there.
What really helps: Regular cleaning with Glove Cleaner. It removes sweat, dirt and artificial turf granules from the latex and reactivates the grip after every wash, rather than just masking it temporarily. This is the foundation on which Grip Glue really works. Grip Glue is the finishing touch before kick-off; Glove Cleaner is the essential maintenance behind it.
MYTH #4: Grip spray is only for matches played in the rain
The truth is: it’s exactly the other way round. For wet conditions, there’s Aqua Glue, a dedicated grip booster designed specifically for rain and wet weather. It’s water-repellent, requires no drying time and is ready for use straight away, even when the ball is already slippery. Grip Glue, on the other hand, is designed for dry, hard conditions: a dry ball, artificial turf in summer, and latex with little natural stickiness. That’s exactly where most goalkeepers think they don’t need anything at all.
Two problems, two products. If you’ve got both in your kit, you’re prepared for any weather conditions, rather than having to compromise with an all-round spray.
MYTH #5: You have to use the spray before every match
The truth is: no. Grip Glue isn’t a mandatory ritual for every single match, but rather a solution for when you need it. Two situations where Grip Glue comes in handy:
✅ Your grip is noticeably slipping, and the latex already feels
a bit worn ✅ Conditions are dry and hard – for example, hot artificial turf – and you realise you need extra grip
Otherwise, your normal care routine is sufficient. Dry your gloves after the match with the KEEPERsport Towel instead of packing them away whilst still damp, then let them dry properly with the Glove-dry Buddy. This keeps the latex in good condition for longer and means you’ll need Grip Glue less often.
The Complete Care System
Three products, three clear purposes:
✅ Glove Cleaner cleans after every use and reactivates the grip, the basis for a long latex lifespan
✅ Aqua Glue for wet and rainy conditions, water-repellent, ready for immediate use
✅ Grip Glue for dry, harsh conditions – providing that extra grip when the ball would otherwise slip away
No one product can replace another. Together, they cover what a single all-round spray never can: every weather condition and every stage of glove care.
Grip Glue – not just a random product
We do not sell off-the-shelf sprays with new labels. Grip Glue is part of our Care System, alongside Glove Cleaner and Aqua Glue, developed to meet the specific requirements of goalkeeper latex. Dry conditions call for a different approach to wet ones. We know the difference because we make the gloves that the spray is ultimately applied to.
Just as important as using the right product at the right time is the basic care that goes with it. The KEEPERsport Towel for drying off after the match, and the Glove-dry Buddy for proper drying afterwards. Together with the Care System, this keeps the grip lasting longer, without the need for constant re-spraying.
