England are fourth in the world rankings and are heading to North America with one of the largest squads in the tournament. Thomas Tuchel took charge in January 2025 and got off to a sensational start: eight competitive wins with eight clean sheets. The opening group match against Croatia in Dallas continues the recent rivalry. England’s hunger for their first title since 1966 remains undiminished.

Manager Thomas Tuchel has named three goalkeepers for the Three Lions: Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson and James Trafford. England will face Croatia, Ghana and Panama in Group L and are considered serious contenders for the title. Jason Steele is also travelling as a training goalkeeper. The trio represent three different stages of their careers – from the experienced tournament hero to the Premier League returnee, to the talented goalkeeper who was brought back for a record fee yet still barely plays.

Pickford is competing in his third World Cup. Since the 2018 tournament in Russia, he has been England’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper, despite occasional debates, despite Tuchel’s initial reluctance, and despite the brief spell under interim manager Lee Carsley when Dean Henderson was preferred. The facts speak for themselves: no other English goalkeeper has produced more memorable moments in major tournaments. The penalty save against Colombia’s Carlos Bacca in 2018, the crucial saves in the penalty shoot-out against Italy at EURO 2020, and his consistency throughout all tournaments.

At club level, he has put up solid numbers this season with 33 Premier League appearances for Everton, including 11 clean sheets. His contract runs until 2029. With 82 international caps and three World Cup appearances, he is England’s most experienced goalkeeper and Tuchel’s clear first choice.

Henderson has come a long way. The Manchester United academy, impressive loan spells at Sheffield United, a Premier League season with United in 2020/21, then a serious thigh injury at Nottingham Forest in 2023 that sidelined him for months. In August 2023, he joined Crystal Palace on a permanent deal for €17.5 million, and he has delivered there. Two full Premier League seasons as first-choice goalkeeper, with 36 appearances and 11 clean sheets in the current campaign. With a market value of €27 million, he is currently the most expensive English goalkeeper behind Pickford. Tuchel has occasionally selected him ahead of Pickford in the Nations League, a clear signal that Henderson poses the most serious challenge for the starting spot.

Trafford’s story this season is one of the most unusual in the whole of England. In July 2025, he returned to Manchester City for £31 million – a British record transfer fee for a goalkeeper and Burnley’s Championship record-holder with 29 clean sheets in a single season. The plan was clear: to be Ederson’s successor, the first-choice keeper of the future. Then, in late summer 2025, Gianluigi Donnarumma arrived in Manchester from PSG – and Trafford was immediately sidelined. Since then, he has made three Premier League appearances. He himself admitted to having been surprised by Donnarumma’s transfer.

For the national team, he won the Under-21 European Championship in 2023. As third-choice keeper, he brings the experience of a player who has proven his worth at the highest level – and who will most likely be looking for a new club in the summer of 2026.
